Heading: Staff Member Spotlight; Colby Cumine, MT-BC; Music Therapist

During his internship at the Snohomish County Music Project, Colby fully realized his love for working with children with varying levels of ability and trauma. Now, as a full-time music therapist, he sees more than 400 children in both group and one-on-one settings. Colby develops session plans, tracks data for sessions, and monitors progress towards established goals. In addition to session-related work, he participates in staff meetings, peer supervision among other events and meetings. Outside of work, Colby likes to make food, play games, and watch movies and TV shows with friends. His favorite games is Dungeons and Dragons, and he would love to explore its possible therapeutic applications.

How did you first become involved with the Music Project? Colby first became familiar with the Music Project during his undergraduate studies. Through practicum, or field work, the Music Project introduced him to a modality of trust and understanding the whole person, which is now a core part of his therapeutic philosophy. Working with elementary children who have a history of trauma or are in unstable home settings is an engaging kind of work that has drawn Colby towards radical work in behavior program settings. He greatly enjoys spending time with his clients, working to understand who they are and how to best support them. Watching a child come out in moments of authentic interaction is what keeps Colby coming back to work every day.

Who inspires you? Children. They are the future and the ways they see and move through the world bring me hope and joy.

What did you want to be growing up? I always wanted to work with animals, first as a zookeeper then as a marine biologist, specifically to study sharks and end up on Shark Week.

If you could plan a vacation anywhere in the world, where you would you go? I would love to explore Europe, having never gone. But at the same time, it would be so nice to go back to Japan and see my friend or back to Australia and New Zealand to see family.

What gives you joy? Friends, family, my people. Good storytelling, be it in movies, games, TV, the occasional book. And food. Food is so good.
